McMillan, Weis Named MCL Players of the Week

By: Nathan Dickinson

The 2016 Midwest Collegiate League season is underway, and a pair of standouts have made their name known early and earned the year’s first MCL Player of the Week honors.

The first MCL position Player of the Week is Jalin McMillan. The University of Illinois sophomore has had a hot bat through the Southland Vikings’ first three games and helped the team jump out to an early 2-1 record. McMillan posted a slash line of .462/.500/.615 and drove in five runs in 13 at-bats. In the latest Vikings contest, he collected three hits in a 6-3 win. He has also scored a run and tripled while maintaining a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.

The MCL Pitcher of the Week, Mitch Weis, dominated one of the MCL’s most successful franchises in the first Bloomington Bobcats game since 2002. Weis pitched seven scoreless innings for Bloomington against the Northwest Indiana Oilmen on Friday, surrendering just one hit. He struck out nine Oilmen and walked just one in the team’s 3-0 win over Northwest Indiana. It was first time the Oilmen lost on Opening Day since 2013, and the first time in team history the team was shutout in a nine-inning game.
